Immortality was never in the cards for us. From the moment a baby takes in its first breath, he or she begins to live out a finite life – a set number on days here on earth. Like an hourglass, the grains run for a moment and one day, the final grain will fall and with that comes the final breath.
We are all living on borrowed time: it could be days; weeks; months; decades or even many years – no one truly knows. This is what makes every single sunrise a miracle: every day you open your eyes and realize you are still here. Every puff of breath air is a blessing; another opportunity to dream; to live; to feel; to love…
I believe there was a promised number of days – 70 years. Some are fortunate enough to have this. Other even get to live many more additional years. Others get to die in their youth. Some only get to live out their childhood and other don’t even make it past infancy.
I don’t know who gets to determine how long one gets. Could it be the creator? Is there a system that is in place? Could it be other forces in the universe? It might as well be another fellow human being who decides you go.
Ultimately, I think that is inconsequential. The fact is the same: we all have that final day. It may come prematurely or at the set time but it will eventually come. What matters is the time in between entry and exit.
Every day we get to be with friends and family is an opportunity to spread love; to hold them; to tell them how much they mean to us. Each sunrise gives us an opportunity to hold on dearly to those we love – to embrace and hug them; to share the laughter’s and the joys of life in spite of the hardships that come with it.
Every hour that we have is an opportunity to make an impact in someone’s life. Every encounter is a moment you get to show kindness; extend a hand of support; offer encouragement; touch a heart and transform lives. We can be a light that shines forth and expels the darkness in people’s lives.
We have the choice to hold on to grudges; to hold resentment and bitterness; to choose hate and destruction or we can choose an alternative. We can choose to forgive because no-one is perfect; we can choose to let go and release those that hurt us and move on; we can choose redemption and salvation.
We have a finite existence; a set number of days and only one life to live. No one knows the hour or the moment that grain of sand will run out. Therefore, with each breath, we live, we dream, we do the impossible and hope that when that final day comes, we shall have left a legacy and made an impact be it at an individual level or at a global scale.
However, this is not where the story ends. There is a promise of eternal life once life in the mortal realm ends. A life of eternal bliss where there is no suffering; no pain; no hurt; no struggle. A life we shall live forever with our heavenly father.
